The Curious Case of Green Crack CBD – Where It’s From and Why It’s Awesome

Described as “energizing but calm, awake and content” – Green Crack CBD is markedly different than the traditional Green Crack. To understand why Green Crack CBD is so different it is important to understand a few things including, CBD.

Can it be the best of two polar worlds? But why and how?

On the shelves in Washington State is a full-spectrum 2:1 CBD-THC cannabis oil called Green Crack CBD. Heylo gets tons of questions about this product, which makes a lot of sense. In less than 6 weeks after it launched it rocketed to become our number one selling oil in the state. But why is it popular? And how did it come to be?

Let’s delve into how and why Green Crack CBD makes you feel the way it does – and where it comes from.

About that name and those effects… Green Crack

The traditional Green Crack strain is one of the most polarizing topics in cannabis both in terms of the name and the experiences it creates. The name Green Crack hasn’t done it many favors, but the name is not without reason. Green Crack is well-known for energy and euphoria – much like the reputation of the other street substance.

Polarizing as its name may be, the strain’s effects are the cause of even more controversy. For some, that energy and euphoria the regular strain is known for can manifest into paranoia and anxiety. For others, the energy that results is on the verge of overwhelming.

Just look through a few Leafly reviews of the regular Green Crack (not Green Crack CBD) – to understand just how polarizing it can be:

  • Better than a cup of coffee, seriously energetic high. Amazing for depression & anxiety, decent for pain relief but definitely more of a mood enhancing strain. -Constant_StateOfMeep
  • Not my favorite. Made me jittery and nervous. It definitely gets you on your feet if that's what you’re looking for. -layfantasia

Why is Green Crack so energizing? It’s highly likely it relates to the strain’s terpene (terpenoid) profile. A traditional Green Crack chemovar is dominated by energetic terpenes like limonene and valencene. It is also low in myrcene, which is the most-common terpene in cannabis and known for sedative effects (aka “couch lock”).

Green Crack CBD is different – and not what you might expect

Described as “energizing but calm, awake and content” – Green Crack CBD is markedly different than the traditional Green Crack. To understand why Green Crack CBD is so different it is important to understand a few things including CBD, where the strain came from, and what the Heylo product is not.

CBD is short for cannabidiol. It is the second most-common phyto-cannabinoid in cannabis after THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) . CBD is non-psychotomimetic - it does not cause intoxication at any dose. While it has little affinity for the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), CBD has been studied for effects on over 65 molecular targets in the body.

Some of the studied effects of CBD include supporting pain relief, anti-anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), anti-inflammatory and promoting bone growth. Like all cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, CBD works in combination with the entire spectrum of compounds produced by the plant. This is described as “The Entourage Effect”. CBD alone is not as effective on the ECS without other cannabinoids, including THC.

CBD alone is not as effective on the Endocannabinoid System without other cannabinoids, including THC.

Unfortunately, years of neglect have left the medical and recreational markets without a plethora of CBD options, as there are with THC. Most CBD strains are dominated by myrcene, the "couch-lock terpene" - helping give CBD the reputation of sedation. But this isn't necessarily the case. A non-myrcene dominate terpene profile for a high-CBD product is not inherently sedative. In fact, it can create a vastly different, potentially slightly energizing, experience for the user.

So, consider this equation – you have your regular Green Crack strain - a high-THC, high-limonene, low-myrcene, energetic chemovar that is a “bit too much” for many people. Now, you introduce CBD, a highly-regarded compound for overall wellness and reducing anxiety. What do you get? The energizing but calm and relaxed feeling of Green Crack CBD.

The source of the CBD is critical – trust the plant.

Yes, Green Crack CBD is a product but, more importantly, it is also a strain. If it's coming from Heylo, the CBD in the final vape cartridge came from the plant – a single chemovar. Green Crack CBD is the result of breeding, not lab formulations. CBD isolate or distillate was not added to Heylo’s Green Crack CBD products. Heylo’s Green Crack CBD was grown under the sun in Central Washington by the Craft Cannabis farm. The strain was created when Green Crack was crossed with California Orange CBD. The developer of these seeds is Humboldt Seed Organization from Humboldt County, California.

For Heylo the source of all compounds in cannabis could not be more critical or central to our mission. Full-spectrum cannabis extracts from full-bud flower is our thing. We believe it leads to better, healthier, more positive experiences. The Entourage Effect described earlier is the result of thousands of compounds working together. The more we tinker in the lab, adding various components to our own liking, or distilling down to isolate certain parts, the more we defy the concept of a botanical. Our philosophy is that the plant is “smarter” than we are – and so we aim to make the essential oil of the plant and nothing else.
